When planning the camera installation height, it is necessary to use the “Mech-Eye Industrial 3D Camera Field of View Calculator” and prepare the height of the bin (or the height of the highest workpiece) and the dimensions of the upper surface area of the bin in advance.
The specific steps are as follows:
1. Calculate the Camera’s Field of View at the Upper Surface Area of the Bin
The camera’s field of view above the bin should completely cover the upper surface area of the bin (as shown in the figure below, where the upper surface area of the bin is b*f). Additionally, a margin of 150–200mm should be reserved on each side of the camera’s field of view above the bin to increase the tolerance for the offset of the workpiece feeding position. In the diagram below, 1 represents workpieces, 2 represents the bin, 3 represents the 3D camera, and 4 represents the field of view at the upper surface area of the bin.
2. Use the “Mech-Eye Industrial 3D Camera Field of View Calculator” to Calculate the Working Distance (WD)
In the FOV Calculator, select the camera model, continuously adjust the working distance value until the calculated FOV width and height are greater than the “camera’s field of view at the upper surface area of the bin” calculated in the previous step.
3. Calculate the Camera’s Mounting Height
Camera mounting height = Working distance (WD) + Height of the full stack (h).
Note: To ensure the quality of the camera’s point cloud, the camera mounting height should be less than the selected camera’s maximum working distance.
